World Sight Day: MeCure Screens 100 as Rotary Club treats Kano residents

Leading human therapeutics in Nigeria, Mecure Healthcare Limited, marks World Sight Day by screening 100 while Rotary Club extend their Social Responsibility to Kano residents.

MeCure Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Kunle Alabi said during the exercise at the Healthcare’s Office in Oshodi, Lagos that 80 percent of the blindness can be treated.

Dr Alabi stated ignorance led to the blindness of some while others were left unattended.

“We discover a lot of people are not aware that there is a proper and standard treatment for cataract. We see people being blind from cataract for several years and they are just kept in one room somewhere, ostracized from the community.

“Sometimes when they now come to us we will wonder and they will be telling us they have been afflicted with it for five years and when they have the appropriate treatment they will start seeing then they will be excited.

The Group Head, Commercial and Strategy, Dr. Adekunle Megbuwanwo who was also at the venue said the company decided to organise a free screening to promote good eyes health and help in preventing blindness by early detection.

He stated that screening was conducted for Cataract, Glaucoma, Refractive error, Diabetic, Retinopathy, Allergy among others which was themed “Make Vision Count”.

The Doctor also advised Nigerians to go for eye check-up regularly while adding that registered persons in the MeCure Preventive Healthcare have been screened and treated for lifestyle diseases at the comfort of their homes.

In a related development, the Rotary Club of Lagos Island, Rotary International in collaboration with Geeta Ashram in Kano carried out a free eye surgery to 436 Kano residents.

The event which was tagged “Vision 2020 – “the right to sight”, recorded a huge turnout and was conducted under Rotary Free Eye Operation Camp.

Beneficiaries of the surgery urged the Government and wealthy Nigerians to obviate the conditions of Nigerians with eye-related problems by organizing free medical screening and treatment.

Dr. Ugbede Idakwo, a Ophthalmologist and one of those who conducted the surgery at the ECWA Eye Hospital, laud the virtues of the sponsors for their moral and financial commitment.

Idakwo urged Nigerians to be conscious of their health as neglect could cause untimely blindness.

In August, the Rotary Club of Lagos, Palmgrove Estate, planned to conduct free cataract surgeries to 1,500 Nigerians.
