Why Tiwa Savage’s stance on Gender Equality is Important

Following Tiwa Savage’s comment on issues of gender equality in a recent interview with The beat 99.9 FM, the award winning queen of the Mavin Records dynasty, has been applauded as well as criticized for stating unequivocally that women should submit to their husbands because the man is the head of the house.

Speaking on The Midday Show with Toolz on The Beat 99.9 FM, Tiwa Savage declared that as a woman, she has had to work twice as hard as her male counterparts just to keep her work moving and keep her art appreciated. She also stated that we live in a society where women are stigmatized and relegated for their gender.

However, the well respected and internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter opined that she does not think that men and women are equal. She stated that God created men and women to be complementary but not equal.

“So, I think as females, when we realize that we can be strong in our career, when we are home we have to realize that the man is the head of the house.”

This is following speculations surrounding the status of the singer’s marriage since the news of her reconciliation made rounds and when she was questioned on the issue, the singer said that everything they are doing is private and that they hope to keep it that way.

A lot of Nigerians have applauded the singer’s comments on gender equality, calling her opinion highly relevant in a world where many people are beginning to see anti-man as the new cool, especially celebrity women. They praised the singer for stating that women should not just allow their society or importance in society affect their role in their homes negatively.

“Don’t let being a woman hinder you, I have and still have to fight to get people to respect and appreciate my work and not limit me because I am female so this really encourages me to keep pushing and breaking boundaries.”
