Things to note about President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the South East

President Muhammadu Buhari, in a historic visit to the South Eastern part of Nigeria, says his presence in Ebonyi State was a demonstration of the Government’s strong belief in the unity of Nigeria.

Buhari stated that as the most populous country in Africa, with over 300 ethnic groups, Nigeria’s diversity is almost unique among nations.

He urged the people not to buy into the senseless propaganda of secession, saying Igbo is Nigeria and Nigeria is Igbo, as both are inseparable.

These are things to note about President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit:

1. He extolled the virtues of the Igbos, saying the South East is known for their ingenuity, industrial and commercial talent, adding that Igbo entrepreneurs, both men and women, contribute to the development of their adopted communities.

2. The President noted that over 60% of Nigeria’s population is less than 25 years old. They have little knowledge of Nigeria’s journey. They were not born during the dark days of civil war and were absent during the nation rebuilding that happened afterwards.

3. The South-East Traditional Council of Rulers conferred the titles; ‘Enyioma 1 of Ebonyi and Ochioha Ndi Igbo 1’ on the President.

4. Buhari promised that the Federal Government will not renege on its promises to the people of the South East.

5. The 2018 Budget includes strategic projects for the region in terms of roads, power, agriculture as well as other sectors.

6. The 14.5km Abakiliki-Afikpo Federal road constructed by the Ebonyi State Government was commissioned.

7. The 700-metre length of the dual flyover over the Trans-Sahara route running from Enugu to Cameroon, and the Senator Offia Nwali flyover, all in the State capital were also commissioned by the President.

8. Buhari performed the foundation stone-laying ceremonies of Ebonyi City Mall, another flyover and road tunnel named after him.

9. The President unveiled the statue of Sir Akanu Ibiam, a former Governor of the old Eastern Region, whom he described as “a great Nigerian, whose notable records of humanitarianism, advocacy of free primary education and rural development will continue to be an inspiration to all”.

10. He lauded Governor Dave Umahi for his vision and commitment to the development of the State.

11. He appreciated the traditional rulers led by Eze Charles Mkpuna, for conferring him with the chieftaincy title of Enyioma 1 of Ebonyi (Trustworthy Friend of Ebonyi).
