As US gymnast doctor awaits sentence over child pornography, Olympic gold gymnast joins the list of females accusing him of sexual abuse

United States Olympic gold gymnast, Gabby Douglas has accused the former USA Gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar, of sexually abusing her.

Ms Douglas joins the list of females accusing Dr Larry of sexual misconduct after fellow Olympic gold medallist, Mckayla Maroney and 2012 USA Olympic gold winning team captain, Aly Raisman also accused him.

Ms Douglas caused a controversy on social media last week following her statement that it’s a responsibility for “women to dress modestly and be classy. Dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd.”

She however did not “advocate victim shaming/blaming in any way, shape or form!”

“I know that no matter what you wear, it NEVER gives anyone the right to harass or abuse you. It would be like saying that because of the leotards we wore, it was our fault that we were abused by Larry Nassar,” Douglas said.

Dr Nassar has been accused of molesting several girls while working for the USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.

According to the girls who have testified against him, he molested them with his hands when they needed medical attention for gymnastics injuries, sometimes while a parent was present in the room.

Nassar had earlier pleaded guilty to child pornography. He also pleaded guilty to three charges when he appeared at a Federal court in Grand Rapids.

He currently awaits trial on three separate cases, alleging that he molested nine girls who were seeking medical care for injuries.

The 53 year old doctor also acknowledged attempting to destroy hard drives containing thousands of inappropriate images which investigators later discovered in a trash can.

Larry Nassar apart from being a USA Gymnastics doctor was also a sports medicine specialist at Michigan State.

Apart from the three criminal cases levied against him, he is also being sued by more than 100 women with similar claims of sexual misconduct against him. Larry could get a jail sentence of up to 25 years if convicted.

Earlier in September, two doctors at the Royal Darwin Hospital were suspended following allegations of sexual assault against female medical students.

Also, a prominent neurologist, Ricardo Cruciani, is facing multiple accusations of taking advantage of vulnerable pain patients at medical facilities in three states, using his reputation as a healer to trap women in long term doctor-patient relationships marked with sexual abuse.

Over 17 women in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey have accused the neurologist of sexual assault when they sought medical care.

An American doctor of Polish background was also accused of sexually abusing his patient. Michael Obrowski had pleaded not guilty to the accusation against him by a patient in her mid-twenties, after she testified that the doctor had conducted an examination on her breasts and private part when she complained of stomach pain and diarrhoea.

There have been increasing cases of sexual harassment especially against female athletes which have resulted in a call for harsh sanctions against offenders.
