Spain has qualified for the Russia 2018 World Cup after a 3-0 comfortable win over Albania in the qualifying match which saw Barcelona defender Gerard Pique jeered and whistled at by Spain’s supporters.
Julen Lopetegui’s men continued their unbeaten run with first half goals from Rodrigo, Isco and Thiago helping Spain seal qualification for Russia 2018.
However, despite the win recorded, Pique was at the receiving end of jeers and whistles from fans at the Alicante Jose Rico Stadium.
Pique who showed support for the Catalonia referendum, voting in an election which the Spanish government has ruled illegal, was subject to jeers from angry Spain supporters. Although Pique has received support from teammates, his name was followed with boos on announcement of the kick off.
The Barcelona defender despite receiving boos from fans also received cheers for his brilliant performance in the game. The jeers gradually turned into cheers as Spain dispatched Albania in grand style.
Rodrigo got the opener in the 16th minute with a well-controlled pass from Isco, sending a left footed volley beyond Etrit Berisha.
The Real Madrid forward, Isco increased the lead in the 24th minute with a blazing shot. Thiago added the third goal of the day in the 28th minute to give Spain a resound win over Albania.
Gerard Pique was substituted in the second half after getting a yellow card which will see him miss Spain’s match against Israel.
He applauded the fans as he made his way off the pitch despite the mixed reactions. Coincidentally his departure saw Albania get the best chance at goal with Armando’s header hitting the post before De gea had to clear off Laridon Latifi scare.
Spain’s victory came easier as Italy were held at home to an embarrassing 1-1 draw against Macedonia.
