Like Peru, Spain could be expelled from Russia 2018

World football governing body, FIFA, has warned the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that involvement and interference from the Spanish government in the Federation’s election for a new President could result in Spain losing their spot in the World Cup.

RFEF, currently led by Jan Luis Larrea on an interim basis, received a letter from FIFA warning the Spanish government of meddling into Spanish Football processes after former President Angel Maria Villar was made to step down on corruption charges.

“No-one is going to take Spain out of the World Cup. It’s impossible and never been talked about. It’s the final straw when people say things like that,” Larrea said.

Spain’s participation in the World Cup could be in danger due to problems between FIFA and the Spanish government as the Spanish government has decided to call elections after the controversial Operation Soule, which, among others, left former RFEF President Angel Maria Villar in prison.

However, this would be in direct contradiction of FIFA’s strict rules – which would rule any involvement from the Spanish government as political interference in the football federation.

FIFA can suspend the membership of any national football team if it discovered that the association has been influenced by external political pressure.

“Each member must manage their affairs independently and ensure that there is no interference by third parties in their affairs.”

Peru had earlier been reminded by FIFA about government meddling after the Peruvian government indicated interest in taking over operations of the Peruvian Football Association.

Earlier this year, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) was banned by FIFA as a result of “undue third-party interference”.

The Kuwait Football Association was also suspended between, 2015-2017 for similar level of interference.
