Cameroon must convince CAF of ability to host AFCAN, says CAF President

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad, has said that Cameroon still has to prove, beyond doubt, its ability to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

Ahmad, who spoke in Burkina Faso, said that Cameroon could be striped off the hosting right if they fail to be convincing on their ability and capacity to host the African Cup of Nations in 2019.

An inspection team is to visit Cameroon and decision will be made based on their report. A total of 24 teams as against the usual 16 teams are to feature in the 2019 AFCON. The CAF Boss has also said that the inspection will be done by experts not the Executive Committee as is usual.

Cameroon, who were the winners of the 2017 Edition hosted by Gabon, have clenched the title five times but are yet to host the tournament.

Meanwhile Issa Hayatou, Ahmad Ahmad’s predecessor has replied the CAF Boss saying:

“The unpreparedness of Cameroon cannot be judged two years before the competition”

Mr. Hayatou, who himself is a Cameroonian, faulted the decision of the CAF Chairman to leave the inspection to people he named independent experts rather than the Executive Committee. The former CAF Boss speaking on a Cameroonian radio programme said

“There is an undertone when the Caf president talks about an independent evaluation team. This is worrying.”
