Bayern Munich sacks Carlo Ancelotti

Bayern Munich’s Manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has been relieved of his role as Coach of the team after an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to PSG.

The former Chelsea Coach has been under pressure following the team’s poor performances in the league, playing pattern and player selection.

“FC Bayern Munich has parted company with head coach Carlo Ancelotti as a result of internal discussions following the 3-0 defeat in the Champions League group stage match at Paris Saint Germain,”

Bayern said on its website.

Bayern also relieved four Italians in Ancelotti’s backroom staff, including his son Davide.

Following his removal, former France International and assistant to Ancelotti, Willy Sagnol is to take charge of the team as Interim Coach pending the signing of a new coach.

Ancelotti has received criticism for his team selection against PSG where he left out Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, and Mats Hummel in the high profile game.

Chairman of Bayern Munich, Karl Heinz Rummenigge in a statement said,

“The game at Paris clearly showed that we had to draw consequences. Hasan and I had a serious discussion with Carlo today and informed him of our decision.

“Carlo is my friend and will remain so, but we have to make a professional decision in the interests of FC Bayern. I now expect the team to have a positive development and top performance, so we can reach our goals for this season.”

The loss to PSG is the biggest in the group stage of the Champions League suffered by Bayern since 2001 to Lyon another French club where they also lost 3-0.

Bayern Munich currently holds the third position after six games. They are three points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Ancelotti won Bayern a fifth consecutive Bundesliga trophy in the previous season when he took over from Pep Guardiola.

He however lost to Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champions League and also lost to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the German Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti has won the Champions League twice with A.C. Milan and once with Real Madrid. He has also coached Juventus, Parma, PSG and Chelsea.

He also won National titles in England, Italy, France and Germany.
