Barcelona rescues late point at Atletico Madrid amidst boos from home fans

Catalan giants, Barcelona had to wait till the 82nd minute before Luis Suarez header leveled things up at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano.

Saul Niguez put the host ahead of Barcelona in the 21st minute in the first half from a 25 yard curling shot beyond the Barcelona goalie.

Lionel Messi almost converted a free-kick but the wood work came to Atletico Madrid’s rescue. Moments later it was Suarez nearly converting from a Lionel Messi free kick as his head missed by inches.

Atletico Madrid pushed forward with Griezmann testing the proficiency of Marc- Andre ter Stegen on two occasions but the German was up to the task.

The home side threaten more as Yannick Carrasco again put Ter Stegen on his toes, but Griezmann rebound shot went wide.

Barcelona tried to respond to the pressure, soaking in pressure by winning possession and fighting to invent chances to turn the tide.

Luis Suarez came to the rescue as he sunk in a Sergio Roberto cross with a powerful down header into the far end of the post beyond Oblak.

The game marked the first time Barcelona will visit the Spanish capital after the Catalan Independence referendum which was declared illegal by the Spanish government.

Hundreds of Spanish National flag were brought in by Atletico Madrid fans as the fans waved and booed every touch the Barcelona team made with Gerard Pique getting the most.

Barcelona played in the new Wanda Metropolitano without any official fan in the 68,000 capacity stadium, making it the second time Barcelona will be playing a game without any fan.

Luis Suarez in a way of getting back at the Altetico supporters cupped his ears in celebration, using his hands.

The result saw Barcelona remain top with 22 points from eight matches and Real Madrid reducing the gap to five points with a 2-1 away wins over Getafe.
