Barcelona fans denied tickets for Atletico Madrid clash

La Liga leaders, Barcelona, will play without their fans when they visit Atletico Madrid in their next La Liga fixture on October 14, after the International break.

Barcelona will make a trip to Atletico Madrid’s new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium without their supporters due to “logistics reasons,” the club announced.

The Club released a statement on their website informing fans that their application for away fans has been cancelled as hosts, Atletico Madrid, can no longer supply tickets previously granted.

This will be the second consecutive match which Ernesto Valverde’s team will be playing without their supporters on the stand.

Barcelona played their last match against Las Palmas in an empty Camp Nou Stadium owing to political unrest with Catalans going ahead to vote for independence referendum which the Spanish Government has ruled illegal.

Players and Coaches alike have reacted towards the events. Gerard Pique of Barcelona described it as the worst experience in his entire career as a player.

Barca had sort to postpone the match but were denied by La Liga authority with threat of sanction of a six point deduction should the match be postponed.

Barcelona announced that Atletico Madrid says they cannot provide tickets that were previously offered for Barca supporters due to logistics reasons at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium which has hosted two La Liga games and one Champions League match against Chelsea since opening in September 16 this year.

“Due to logistics problems in the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Atletico de Madrid cannot supply the tickets previously offered to FC Barcelona supporters club ahead of La Liga match on Saturday 14th of October.

“Therefore, all FC Barcelona supporters’ clubs ticket applications for the above match have been cancelled,”

the club’s statement said.

This development according to some is not far-fetched from the current political unrest in Spain and Catalonia in particular.

Barcelona has not clearly supported the Catalan Independence but has supported citizens’ right to vote.

Overtime, FIFA has made steps to separate football from politics. However, Barca has been more of a political club for Catalonia.

“Barcelona are a highly political club” Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger had said. The camp Nou has been the only avenue for Catalans to express themselves after the language was ban by Francisco Franco in 1714.

Barcelona fans have been known to chant “Independiente” in the 17th minute of every home match in commemoration of 1714.

Camp Nou has always been the only ground where the Catalans express themselves with Barcelona’s motto of “Mes que un club” (more than a club) saying it all.
