Barcelona confirms possible La Liga exit, Premier League on alert

Barcelona President, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has confirmed that Barcelona could leave the Spanish La Liga should Catalonia gain independence.

He added that Barcelona would have to decide on the suitable league to play in, in such event.

Catalonia is set to gain independence after 90 per cent of voters voted in favour of independence in a referendum marred with violence and clash with the Spanish police.

More than 800 persons were reported to have needed medical attention after the police clashed with rioters during the referendum which the Spanish government have ruled illegal.

Bartomeu also confirmed that Barcelona would embark on a strike in protest against the violence of the riot police against the voters.

“In the case of independence, the club and the members would have to decide on which league we would play.

“We are going through difficult and complicated moments with respect to what could happen in the future, we will take it on with calm and wisdom,” Bartomeu said in a board meeting.

Barcelona were forced to play their last game against Las Palmas behind closed doors as the club intends to embark on a strike on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Gerard Pique was booed during training with the Spanish team for the first time after showing his support for the Catalonia independence. The Barcelona defender stated that he is prepared to leave the Spanish team before 2018.

Catalan Sports Minister, Gerard Figueras, hinted that it is possible for Barcelona to play in another league outside Spain in case of independence.

“In the case of independence, Catalan teams in La Liga, Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona will have to decide where they want to play: in the Spanish league or a neighbouring country like Italy, France or the Premier League.

Monaco plays in France, in England Welsh Clubs. I don’t think that UEFA has anything against seeing another club play in a different league from their country,” he added.

Bartomeu also confirmed the resignation of Barcelona’s Vice-President Carles Vilarrubi, among other staff members.

“What we witnessed in our country yesterday was inadmissible.

“We demand respect for the people of Catalonia and we shall once again stand alongside its legitimate representatives. We Catalans have won the right to be heard.”
