Why people expected Oshiomhole to be the SGF

President Muhammadu Buhari has terminated the appointment of Babachir Lawal, the ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Ayo Oke, the former National Intelligence Agency Boss. The sack is based on the recommendations by the Committee set up to investigate the alleged cases of corruption levied against both of them, Chaired by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. Lawal and Oke were both suspended in April 2017, pending the outcome of the investigations. Meanwhile, Boss Gida Mustapha has been appointed the new SGF.

However, some Nigerians were confident that the former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, would be ‘the man the cap fits’, but he was not appointed.

Those who wanted Oshiomole felt since the Buhari-led administration has been accused of nepotism by some Nigerians who have said his kitchen cabinet is full of Northerners, appointing Oshiomole would have been a good point to make seeing that he is from the South.

Many have maintained that with the achievements and experience of Adams Oshiomhole, from the Nigerian Labour Congress to his two-term Governorship, he was qualifies for the position of the SGF.

President Muhammadu Buhari decided to appoint Boss Mustapha with some speculating that Mustapha was chosen simply because the people of Adamawa needs to be appeased, as the former SGF is from Adamawa. Others have lamented that when Boss Mustapha ran for Governor in 2014, Babachir Lawal was his financier.

Edo based Counselor, Islamic cleric and public commentator, Asunogie Nurudeen, who is reputed as a fearlessly honest person, took to social media to call out President Buhari for his decision to appoint such a close associate of Babachir to occupy the same position Babachir is being sacked from.

Meanwhile, the former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams A. Oshiomhole, has congratulated the new SGF, saying the appointment of Boss Mustapha came at the time the Government was working towards rejuvenating the system, in order to enhance service delivery to the people.

“His appointment would no doubt; rekindle the strong determination of the present APC government in delivering the dividends of democracy for the good of all”.

The former Governor extolled the virtues of the new SGF, stating that he organized the management of all the factors, which led to the victory of the party at the 2015 general elections.

“As a calm, collected and silent organiser, he is very much at home with all the critical elements of the party and knows how to coordinate effortlessly without carrying any air around himself”.
