The Monkeypox rumour unveils as IPOB urges children to return to school

The alleged injection of the Monkeypox virus on school children in the South-East by the Nigerian Army revealed its perpetrators as IPOB urge children back to school saying the Military men have withdrawn from the area.

Panic erupted in the South-East last Wednesday, as it was speculated that Soldiers were invading Schools in Anambra, injecting school children with the Monkeypox virus.

The rumour spread far and wide around States in the South-East, as parents were seen in schools, disrupting academic activities, picking up their children which led to early closure of some schools.

Some private schools locked up the gates to prevent children from any anticipated health risk.

This prompted the State Government to wade in, to debunk the allegations, adding that the medical outreach is part of the “Army’s social responsibility to members of the public.”

The Governor further said that the Armed Forces will be contacted and advised to stop the healthcare programme, so as to ensure proper sensitization is conducted.

The Nigeria Army also denied the administering of any vaccine or soldiers’ invasion.

Reacting to the rumour, Spokesman of the 82 Division Enugu who was at the healthcare programme, Sagir Musa said “As I am talking to you right now, I am at the venue of the outreach and I can assure you that there is nothing like that. The Commissioner for Health in the State and some other dignitaries are also here and the programme is moving on smoothly.”

The Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has now released a statement urging parents to send their children back to school.

In a statement released by the Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, it claimed that security measures have been put in place and alarm would be raised at the sight of Military vehicles.

“We, the Indigenous People of Biafra and its leadership worldwide under the command of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to inform Biafrans across the length and breadth of Biafraland to return our children back to school from Monday, October 16, 2017.

“Right now, IPOB has ascertained that Nigerian soldiers have withdrew the vaccination programme.

“Our early warning team is in place all over Anambra State and should anything untoward be spotted on Monday or Nigerian Army vehicles found anywhere near any school, IPOB would raise the alarm immediately to recall our children as was the case last week.”

Since the rumour began, there have been no official reports or cases of Monkeypox virus in the State or South-East region.
