The many times “’God”’ told people to run for President

Religion has always been a soft sell for politicians to garner support and votes from the masses with many “Poli-Pastors” iterating that God has called them to become President.

Pastor Chris Okotie founded this movement in Nigeria with repeated claims that he will be President in the next election while failing every time he tried.

Recently, the Senior Pastor and Founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, a Lagos-based church, Pastor Tunde Bakare announced that God has instructed him to run for Presidency in 2019.

In a Cross Over Church service on Sunday, Bakare said the Lord told him that politics is not yet over for him, as there is still one thing left for him to do.

“And He said to me, I will work it out myself. I will make it happen in due course. Please trust me, I lie not in the Holy Ghost. This is not easy for me to share with you. I shared this with you, so that you can pray along with me.”

Bakare further backed his prophecies by revealing what he had said in previous times which came to past.

“In 1998, I told you that I saw your President dying between two women. Did it happen? I’m telling you again: some of these political juggernauts will fall at the feet of women and you will see it happen.”

The Pastor was the running mate of the current President, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2011 which they lost to Goodluck Jonathan.

Revealing why he ran with Buhari then, he said his (Buhari) views on restructuring, which to him, was positive, made him accept to be his running mate.

“As part of a series of dialogues, in a bid to seek the best of the North and the best of the South as an alternative to the then incumbent administration, we also engaged the major candidates ahead of the 2011 elections in search of commitment to the restructuring of the nation, among other desirables.

“On January 15, 2011, I was invited by General Buhari to be his running mate and I initially declined because I had engaged the polity not with the intention to contest elections but to midwife genuine National rebirth.

“My eventual acceptance was contingent on the mutual understanding that the restructuring of Nigeria would be top on the agenda.”

However, Pastor Bakare is not the first to have mentioned God as a point of reference for vying for Presidency.

In 2011, Herman Cain told young supporters in Atlanta that God told him to run for Presidency of the United States of America.

“I prayed and prayed and prayed. I’m a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I’d ever done before in my life. And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. ‘You’ve got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?’”

He later halted his campaign after several accusations of sexual misconduct, which he claimed were too much for him to bear.

While “God” was backing Cain, He also revealed to Michele Bachmaan to contest too.

“Well, every decision that I make, I pray about, as does my husband, and I can tell you, yes, I’ve had that calling and that tugging on my heart that this is the right thing to do.”

That was not the first time He called Bachmaan. In 2016, she claimed God spoke to her to run for Congress.

“God then called me to run for the United States Congress. And I thought, what in the world would that be for? And my husband said, “You need to do this.”

Rick Santorum also stated that God has spoken to him to contest for the place of President.

His wife, Karen Santorum had told CBN News in 2011 that her husband’s candidacy was about “defending God’s truth in the world,” explaining that “it really boils down to God’s will. What is it that God wants? … We have prayed a lot about this decision, and we believe with all our hearts that this is what God wants.”

In the 2015 Elections, several candidates also claimed God has steered them towards the direction of running for Presidency.

Ben Carson, Scott Walker, John Kasich, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz all associated their campaign declaration to God.

Some have argued which of the God is backing more than one candidate for an election, while other asserts that such god has a sense of humour, since none of them eventually won the election.
