Journalists barred from the National Assembly as Buhari present budget

Journalists from some of the Media, especially Online Media, have been barred from the National Assembly as President Muhammadu Buhari present the 2018 budget to the house.

The Journalists were prevented from entry even after displaying their identity cards to the security operatives at the point of entrance as their names were missing from the “accreditation list” prepared by the Research and Information Directorate of the National Assembly.

The security personnel said it is an order from above and they are just carrying out their duty.

Even if you’ve been covering here for years. My own work is just to check the list. There was a circular and this list was sent to us yesterday.”

One of the Journalists stated that he was at the House on Monday to make inquiry if there would be accreditation and he was told that there would be none only for him to meet a new development today.

The President had written a letter to the Senate and House of Representatives, informing them of his presenting the Appropriation Bill to the joint session of the National Assembly.

“In pursuant to Section 81 of the 1999 Constitution, may I crave the kind indulgence of the National Assembly to grant me the slot of 1400 hours on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, to formally address a joint session and lay before the NASS the 2018 budget proposal,” it read.

In May, the Senate banned seven Television Stations from covering its proceedings.
