Sexual violence rises as Lagos records 950 cases this year

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), has disclosed that 950 cases of sexual violence have been recorded this year compared to 452 cases last year.

The Alternate Chairman of the team, Mrs Omotilewa Ibirogba, made the revelations while unveiling the ‘6820’ Short Message Service (SMS) short-code for reporting domestic and sex

She added that 10 persons have been convicted and registered for sexual violence and are being monitored.

Mrs Ibirogba also said the SMS short-code was developed to give Lagosians the ability to report and get response to incidents of rape, domestic and child abuse.

She instructed residents to simple dial *6820# or send an SMS to 6820 to receive instructions on steps to take for the respective cases.

“Aside from the immediate response this technology solution would provide victims, activating 6820 would also assist the State Government in gathering and collating incident information, generate heat-maps within the metropolis, providing automated daily and monthly reporting, comprehensive central database, information system and analytics and data that can be used for formulating of prevention policies in the State.”

Last month, DSVRT revealed that 852 cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year.

While explaining in details, the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem, said there were 564 domestic violence cases, 60 defilement cases, ce cases, 60 defilement cases, 30 rape cases, 11 attempted rape, 123 child neglect and abuse cases, and 84 other cases.

He also observed that men are now reporting cases of Domestic Violence as 55 persons came forward this year compared to 13 of last year.

“This year a total of 55 men came forward to report. This is in contrast to 14 men that reported last year. Furthermore, the data revealed that most of sexual assault cases were perpetrated in the afternoons, during the weekday. The data also discloses that 95 percent of perpetrators of sexual violence are known to the victims.

“This has necessitated the need to embark on sensitisation campaigns for parents on parenting skills and child abuse prevention tips as well as trainings for children on Child’s Rights, Child Abuse, safety and how to preserve evidence.

“Under the year of review, we have witnessed an increase in reporting from Agege, Ikorodu and Oshodi. We have also witnessed an increase in reporting of cases, via telephone and walk ins from other states, mostly from Ogun, Osun and the eastern part of the country.”

The Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved the establishment of Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Fund, which would provide empowerment for survivors of domestic violence.
