Weah and Boakai to have a run-off by November

Former Footballer and World Best Player, George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai are set for run-off to determine the next President of Liberia.

The first round of the elections, results reveal Weah is leading in 11 County out of 15.

His rival and incumbent Vice President, Joseph Boakai, leads in only One County and second in several others.

In Liberia, candidate needs more than 50% of the votes to be an outright winner and if not achieved, a second round will hold which will be on November 7.

With 20 candidates vying to replace Sirleaf, Africa’s first female President.

The Chairman of the National Election Commission, NEC, Jerome Korkoya, warned supporters to avoid declaring their candidates as winner until the final result is announced.

According to the NEC, Weah, who is the candidate for Congress for Democratic Change, (CDC), leads with 240, 750 votes (39.6%), closely followed by Unity Party Candidate and Vice President Joseph Boakai with 160, 975 votes (31.1%).

Liberty Party candidate, Charles Brumskine, obtained 48,219 votes (9.3%).

Alternative National Congress (ANC) candidate, Alexander Cummings received 34,550 votes (6.7%).

Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) candidate, Prince Johnson received 24,948 votes (4.8%).

51-year-old Weah, had an illustrious career playing for Europe elites clubs like, Monaco, PSG, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille.

He also won several awards which includes African Footballer of the Year which he won thrice, BBC African Footballer of the Year, Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year, Golden Foot Legends Award to mention but few.
