US ends its 20-year trade ban in Sudan, says Sudan remains in the list of ‘States Sponsors of Terrorism’

The United States Department has announced its decision to revoke the penalizing economic and trade measures it place on Sudan since 1997, after securing a commitment from the country that it would not pursue arms deal with North Korea.

In a statement by the State Department Spokeswoman, Heather Nauret said the sanctions will end October 12, adding that Sudan will remain in the United States list of ‘States Sponsors of Terrorism’ which carries an embargo on weapon sales and restrictions on aid.

The statement cited the Khartoum based Government’s

“sustained positive actions, to maintain a cessation of hostilities in conflict areas in Sudan, improve humanitarian access throughout Sudan, and maintain cooperation with the United States on addressing regional conflicts and the threat of terrorism”.

Sudan welcomed the US decision to end its ban on trade but however called on Washington to also remove the country’s name from its blacklist of ‘state terror sponsors’.

“The leaders of Sudan, the Government of Sudan, and the people of Sudan welcome the positive decision taken by the American President, Donald Trump, for removing the economic sanctions completely”.

“Sudan is looking forward to building normal relations with the United States, but wants its name to be removed from the list of ‘State Sponsors of Terrorism’ as there is no reason to have Sudan on that list”.

The United States had also removed Sudan from a travel ban that was earlier placed on the country last month.
