FG orders investigation of former JAMB and NIMASA heads

Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered the investigation of former Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Director General and former Joint Admission Matriculation Board Registrar as a result of disparity between remittals of internally generated revenue.

Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), for the first time since its existence in 1978, has been able to remit the sum of N5bn to Federal Government as its internally generated revenue, with a promise from the Education Ministry to pay additional N3bn, compared to the N3m it received from the past Registrar.

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, stated that the disparity in remittance of both agencies in the past and presently have necessitated the probe.

“The highest amount that JAMB had ever remitted into the consolidated revenue fund before this management was N3m.

“This year so far they have done N5bn and the Minister of Education reported that they have an additional N3bn that they are ready to remit which will take this year’s figure alone to N8bn and they have not increased their charges, they have not increased their fees.

“So, the question the Council members were asking where was all this money before?”

Federal Government has also hailed the Director General of NIMASA, Peterside Dakuku for improving in its fortunes of remittance. NIMASA remitted N24bn in 2016 compared to N4.95bn that was remitted in 2015.

The Finance Minister disclosed that others with similar disparity in their revenue remittance will also be investigated.

“So, the directive was given that we must call the former heads of all these agencies and similar ones to account (for their financial dealings), and that is the directive we have been given and that is what we intend to do and it is a similar story with other agencies.

It would be worthy of note that the former JAMB Registrar, Prof Dibu Ojerinde, made a feat as his administration was the first to ever introduce Computer Based Test (CBT).

However, the immediate past Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolkemi, is currently facing a 40 count charge of fraud and money laundering to the tune of N34.5bn.

Meanwhile, the present NIMASA Director General has been able to achieve a lot of things, including the fact that he has relentlessly pushed for the passage of anti-piracy bills for a safer Nigeria Maritime domain. He has also foiled seven of the eleven cases of pirate attacks recorded in Nigerian waters amongst others.

Prof Ishaq Oloyede, who is the present JAMB registrar and the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, has been able to remit the highest revenue to the tune of N5bn since the inception of the body.
