Lagos promise more quality on LAKE Rice production

The Lagos State Government has promised top quality for LAKE Rice, adding that its standard cannot be compromise. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Oluwatoyin Suarau who made the assurance on Saturday at a sales report review event in Ikeja, added that the product was a way of ensuring food security in the State.

He noted that the product go through different analyses before being released for public consumption and Government is doing everything possible to ensure availability and affordability at all times.

“The Lagos State Government will continue to maintain the quality of LAKE Rice. The major difference between LAKE Rice and imported rice is that the imported product has a minimum of five-year storage life span, while LAKE Rice is fresh. The product is available in all designated sales centres across the State.

“Food production and self-sufficiency have been given priority to sustain Lagos because our state is the largest consumer of food commodity in Nigeria.”

The Commissioner added that a 32-metric-tonne per-hour Rice Milling Plant has been acquired on the direction of the State’s Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and would start operations.

“Lagos is also collaborating with Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo states in the area of rice production so as to ensure that adequate rice is supplied to the 32-metric-tonnes-per hour rice mill.”

Suarau noted that the residents can get the Rice from the Secretariat of 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Councils Development Area of the State.

The LAKE (an acronym for Lagos and Kebbi) was launched in December 2016 to enhance food security and showcase the ability of Nigeria to become a Rice producing nation.
