ASUU reacts to LAUTECH Governing Council’s resumption date

September 15, 2017 has been declared by the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, as the new resumption date for academic activities.

In a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the governing council of LAUTECH, Jacob Agboola, who said

“The governing council of Ladoke Akintola University has approved resumption of activities on the institution’s campuses with effect from Friday. September 15, 2017”

“Students of the university are expected to return to school on Monday September 25, 2017 while full academic activities, the details of which the senate will announce, shall commence immediately after the independence anniversary holiday”

“Council commends the Governors of Oyo and Osun States, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola respectively, for agreeing to support the University with necessary funds to enable the University to return to its normal work schedule and reinvigorate its latent capacities for accelerated and sustainable growth and development”

He stated that the council appreciates all stakeholders for their understanding and support and appealed to students, staff, parents as well as the general public to demonstrate greater faith and dedication to the wellbeing of the institution as better days lie ahead of it.

“Concerted efforts should therefore be geared towards ensuring that nothing is allowed to disrupt the normal work of the University again”.

However, LAUTECH Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other Workers’ Union in the University have said they are unaware of the resumption of the institution slated for today.

Chairman ASUU, LAUTECH State Chapter, Dr Biodun Olaniran said

“we (ASUU) will not resume until our demands are met; until our demands are addressed, the strike continues”

Chairman Joint Action Committee (JAC), Mr Muraina Alesinloye, in a statement said

“we are not aware of the resumption and you will agree with me that you cannot obey any directive which you are not aware of

This raises the question ‘Is the governing council of the University having a strained relationship with the State Chapter of ASUU, LAUTECH?’

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Comrade Aruna Kadiri when contacted by etn24 newsroom said

“they have called off the strike and we (NANS) have been having sleepless nights, having meetings with all critical stakeholders, God willing it has paid off”

It would be recalled that the ASUU State Chapter of LAUTECH have gone on strike twice this year, demanding the payment of salary arrears of its Union Members.
