Aisha Alhassan remains silent about Atiku’s resignation, But Daily Trust says she dumped him

Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan has kept mum over the resignation of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar from the All Progressive Congress (APC), but some Media Houses including Daily Trust believes she has deserted her “political godfather”.

Mrs. Alhassan stirred controversies in September when she declared her support for Atiku, should he contest for Presidency in 2019.

“Let me tell you today that if Baba said he is going to contest in 2019, I swear to Allah, I will go before him and kneel and tell him that ‘Baba I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve your Government as a Minister but Baba, just like you know I will support only Atiku because he is my godfather. If Atiku said he is going to contest.”

Mrs. Alhassan’s stance for loyalty and commitment was to Atiku “if he is going to contest”, not defect.

Last Friday, Atiku issued a letter of resignation to APC, claiming the party has failed in its objectives of promoting good governance and abandoning the youths.

“While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.

“But more importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

“A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.”

Although, he did not state which political party he would be joining, many believed he would return to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP); a political party which he was one of its founding fathers.

Atiku has not also declared if he would be running for Presidency in 2019.

On Tuesday, there were reports that the Alhassan met with President Buhari at the State House in Abuja. While the purpose of the meeting is not known, there were speculations that she went to pledge her allegiance to the President following, Atiku’s resignation.

Daily Trust ran a story with the headline: Mama Taraba, Bindow dump Atiku, remain in APC.

In the story, there were no official statements from the her that she dumped Atiku or pledge her loyalty to APC.

Daily Trust relied on anonymous sources who said Al-hassan pledged her loyalty to APC and would not follow Atiku on the road to defection.

Even after claiming that text messages and calls sent to her were not replied nor responded to, Daily Trust still believed that Mama Taraba had already switched allegiance, all based on an anonymous source.
