To combat electoral violence, 21,000 policemen deployed ahead of Anambra Elections

As part of efforts to curb electoral violence and security challenges in the forthcoming November 18 Anambra Governorship Election, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, disclosed that 21,000 policemen, water boats and helicopters would be deployed to the State.

The IGP who made the announcement to Newsmen at the State House in Abuja, after meeting with the Coalition of Civil Society Organization (CSO), revealed that all necessary logistics have been put in place to ensure a peaceful election.

He further stated the schedule of the deployment; 21,084 policemen will be deployed to which 17,320 of them will cover all the polling units across the State.

Another 2,484 policemen will be patrolling 414 major streets while the remaining 1,280 will be shared across 320 polling centres.

“By the grace of God, we are going to have a successful and peaceful election in Anambra State.

“We are deploying our water boats to take care of the waterways; we are deploying our helicopters to take care of the aerial surveillance and we are deploying our conventional policemen and special police units to take care of situations on ground.

“The security challenges are obvious.  You know we are having elections in Anambra state and we are having challenges in various part of the country especially some of these issues of kidnapping and these are things I discussed with the President and the measures taken to address it squarely.”

The Police Boss added that personnel are on standby to tackle any threats or riots during and after the elections.

“Special Police Patrol of the general areas, stop and search, raiding of criminal hideouts and other crime prevention and control strategies are currently ongoing and will continue throughout the election period and beyond.”

Mr IGP also spoke on the security update along the Kaduna-Abuja highway which have been marred with kidnapping, saying the Force is now in control of the situation as Special Unit have been deployed, which have successfully arrested 3,000 suspects kept in various prisons.
