The many cultural taboo of Rahama Sadau

Expelled Kannywood Actress, Rahama Sadau, has finally tendered an apology letter to the movie industry seeking for a recall.

In a letter written to MAPPON, she admit being fallible and sought forgiveness.

“I am human and liable to make mistakes and as a daughter who stand to be corrected, I wish to plead and ask my colleagues, the executive member of all guilds, the entire people of the North and audience at large to forgive me.”

Sadau was expelled last year October after appearing in a romantic musical video by ClassiQ, a Jos-born Artist.

The expulsion was given by Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN), a coalition of association that set rules and regulations governing the conduct of actors and actresses, as well as production of movies in Northern Nigeria.

In a Statement released by the association, signed by its Secretary, Salisu Muhammed, it tagged the actress appearance as immoral.

“Sequel to the recent meeting in which a resolution reached by all Guilds and associations under the unified body of Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN), That Rahama Sadau has been expelled from the Hausa indigenous film industry, popularly known as Kannnywood.

‎“This is as a result of her recent immoral appearance in a certain video song where she appeared in series of visuals (video and pictorial) hugging and cuddling the music artist ClassiQ in his newly released video.

“The leadership of the industry has taken this decision for her violation of its codes of ethics, known to all it practitioners.”

In 2015, the actress was also suspended for six month after a disagreement with a producer, Adam Zango, which she accused of demanding sex for a role in one of his movie.

She later apologised in an interview, saying she regretted what she did.

Rahama has since then gained recognition in the Nigerian Nollywood industry and added international recognition with African-American artiste, inviting her on a working relationship.

In Kannywood, the industry is guided by the culture of the North, which prohibits cuddling, hugging, kissing or any form of physical contact with the opposite sex.

Some have criticize the authorities saying it is biased for banning Sadau and silent on Ali Nuhu, one of the popular faces of the industry.

But Nuhu, who justified the ban in an interview, said it was logical but extreme as lesser punishment would have been meted.

“I think that her expulsion was too rigid. If it was like giving her a warning or placing her on suspension, I can understand but expelling someone from her profession, I don’t think it’s fair.”

The “King of Kannywood” said movies in which he was pictured with females are those from Nollywood which he acted many years ago.

The strong cultural values and belief stopped the Federal Government proposed establishment of “Film Village” in Kano by Islamic Clerics.

The reason given by the clerics was that it would destroy Islamic values and promote immorality.

The Kannywood industry is streamline to the majority religion of the people, which is Islam. Thus, films are being reviewed by the Kano State Film and Censorship Board to monitor films and activities of the industry.

Many have also criticized Rahama mode of dressing in movies which contradict her culture and religion.

Her roles in some Nollywood movies where she is seen exposing her hair and other body parts that needs to be covered goes against the culture.

The industry generally has been affected, as actresses are now seen in movies, dressing in a manner that is against the culture and religion of the people.

There has also been use of vulgar words in movies by actors, which is alien to the Hausa culture.

Rahama is a good actress but considering her conservative society, she has crossed the red line.
