475 Pump Action rifles intercepted at Tin Can Island, Lagos

More than a week after the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted a load of 1,100 pump action rifles at the Tin Can Island in Lagos, another container comprising 475 pump action rifles imported from Turkey have also been seized.

Strikingly, the owner is the same importer of the previous container that was intercepted over a week ago.

The importer had falsely declared that the recent consignment was elbow plumbing plastics.

The rifles, which were hidden with small connecting pipes, was discovered after the Customs Area Controller of the Command, Bashir Yusuf, ordered a detailed profiling of the importer of the 1,100 pump action rifles recovered earlier.

National Public Relations Officer of the service, Joseph Attah said

“let’s not speculate about arms please. A container is being suspected and examination will reveal whatever is inside”

Spokesperson, Tin Can Island of NCS, Uche Ejesieme said

“I am not aware and don’t know anything about it”

“Nobody can stampede us into confirming something that is not true, the container is still being profiled to know what is inside, after this is done, we will invite the media as we have done in previous times”

Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the on-going investigation, NCS have arrested and detained 28 officers, working at the Tin Can Island Command of the service.

However, some of the 28 officers might be released if the investigation does not find them guilty, as some of them might only be involved in the documentation but unaware of the content of the container.

UPDATE: The DG of Custom later confirmed the report and has promised to meet with Turkish Envoy over the issue of Arms importation from Turkey.
