The reports in some prominent online Media outlets that included Nigeria as one of the Countries present at the formal opening of United States Embassy in Jerusalem is untrue, ETN24 can confirm.
The US embassy was formally opened in Jerusalem to mark the 70th anniversary of the formation of Israel, despite the general concern that it would harm peace talks and without the support of the United Nations.
Before the event, Israel said it has sent invitations to 83 Countries that have embassies in the Country including Nigeria.
Although it was reported that Nigeria accepted the invitation, emerging reports revealed there were no Nigerian representatives present at the ceremony.
Countries that attended include United States, Honduras, Hungary, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Rwanda, Serbia, South Sudan, Thailand, and Ukraine.
Others are; Vietnam, Paraguay, Tanzania, Zambia, Albania, Angola, Austria, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ethiopia Georgia, Guatemala.
One of the Media which reported Nigeria as being present at the event was Aljazeera, but it later made a retraction, saying it earlier information was incorrect.
The United States confirmation of Jerusalem, as the capital of Israel, generated frowns and criticisms from the United Nations and many Countries around the globe.
Many believed the decision is sentimental and bias as the Muslims, Jews and Christians lay claim to the city as sacred part of their religion.
Following the opening of the embassy, reports revealed that Israeli forces fired at protesters, killing at least 58 persons, and injuring thousands.
The incident was reported as the deadliest day since the end of Gaza Conflict in 2014.
Nigeria is, at the most modest estimate, 50% Muslim and its Muslim community see the issue of Palestine as one that is extremely sensitive. Even more, Nigeria, like most countries of the world had voted against the decision of the United States to cite its Israel Embassy in Jerusalem being that it is at least a disputed land.
The US, while praising countries which voted for its decision, strangely explained away the majority decision against its move with the claim that it is an internal US decision and that any vote on it violates its sovereignty. It resorted to threatening Nations which held a different opinion.
