When America agrees with Israel, it Vetoed for Israel. When America disagreed with Israel, it Vetoed for Israel

During the United Nations General Assembly, a vote was conducted on the United States of America’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, with 128 votes in favour of the rejection as against 9.

President Trump had on December 6, declared the holy city, which has been under contention between Israel and the Palestinian State since Israel annexed it in 1967, as the capital of Israel.

The decision has been widely criticized by world leaders, prompting a rare session of the UN General Assembly.

The 193-member Assembly had a resolution to either support or rebuke Mr. Trump’s decision with 128 nations including Nigeria, China, Germany, Russia, going against the decision, while Togo, Honduras, Guatemala supported it and 35 Countries including Canada, Australia abstained from the resolution.

Before the exercise, US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, noted that America would remember this day and that President Trump had instructed her to report back on those countries who voted against US.

“America will put our embassy in Jerusalem. No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that.

“But this vote will make a difference on how Americans look at the UN and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the UN.

“When we make generous contributions to the UN we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognised and respected.”

Though the resolution was reported to be symbolic and nonbinding, it has usurped world politics and one of the world most sensitive diplomatic issues.

It also shows that America is alone in its recognizing Israel as the Capital of Jerusalem, and would also serve as a recommendation and expression of the international community’s stance on Jerusalem.

Earlier on Monday, the US had vetoed UN Security Council resolution 14-1, which was proposed by Egypt to call for the reversal of Jerusalem’s decision.

Being one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, it had the power to block any resolution from passing with the use of veto.

The US could not veto the resolution that was why it threatened Countries who vote against them with stoppage of aids.

This is not the first time a US President is falling out with the United Nations.

In 2003, the UN opposed America’s move to invade Iraq after it claimed that Saddam Hussein was harboring Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD).

The UN on its part said it has been carrying out periodic search on the Country, but found nothing of such.

United States ignored and overrode the objection of the UN, thereby launching its invasion of Iraq. An invasion, the US now agrees was based on faulty intelligence as there were no weapons of mass destruction.

Barack Obama’s administration also opposed Security Council’s condemnation Israel’s settlement construction. The US claims it agrees the settlements were illegal but said such resolution will harm chances of peace talk. The US now, however, rejects a resolution that also says recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel will be harmful to peace talks.
