Former USA Olympic gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, has been sentenced to 60 years in jail for three counts relating to child sex abuse image found on his computer.
Nassar agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors and was given a 20 years jail term for each count.
He also pleaded guilty to two other counts of sexually assaulting female gymnast under the guise of medical treatment, and will be sentenced in January 2018.
US District Judge Janet Neff in Grand Rapids, Michigan gave Nassar the maximum sentence after investigators discovered more than 37,000 images showing abuse on Nassar’s computer, including children as young as six.
He had admitted possessing child pornography, receipt of child pornography and obstruction of justice for trying to destroy evidence last year, as the police investigation gathered pace.
“The seriousness of his conduct, and the devastating impact it has had on so many, cannot be overstated.
“He abused my trust, he abused my body and he left scars on my psyche that may never go away… He needs to be behind bars so he will never prey upon another child,” Olympic gold medallist McKayla Maroney wrote in a victim impact statement before Thursday’s sentencing.
More than 130 women have also filed civil lawsuits against the former gymnast Doctor, alleging abuse.
Nassar’s sexual abuse charges mounted following the hashtag “me too” where sexual assault victims made accusations against various personality. A number of women including actresses Angelina Jolie, Rose McGowan and Gwyneth Paltrow also used #MeToo to accuse Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of rape, although he has denied the allegations.
