What the ‘One Planet Summit’ that Buhari is attending means

One Planet Summit, which will hold Tuesday, December 12, 2017, brings international leaders and committed citizens from around the world together to discuss how they can support and accelerate global efforts to fight climate change.

The three aims of the ‘One Planet Summit’ are to take tangible and collective action, innovate and support one another.

One Planet Summit recognises that all countries are affected differently by climate change, but some are more vulnerable, and as such, the summit seeks tangible collective action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The theme of the summit, “Climate Change Financing” is meant to innovatively pool public and private finance to support and accelerate common efforts to fight ecological problems.

France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, who would host over 50 Heads of Government in Paris, aims to launch a new drive to mobilise funds needed worldwide to combat climate change.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday depart Nigeria for Paris, where he will join over 50 world leaders in the Summit holding the following day.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says President Muhammadu Buhari will attend Lunch hosted by President Macron, for Heads of State and Governments, at the Elysee Palace before heading for the Summit venue.

President Buhari and other world leaders and participants will also make presentations under four sub-themes namely: Scaling-up Finance for Climate Action; Greening Finance for Sustainable Business; Accelerating Local and Regional Climate Action; Strengthening Policies for Ecological and Inclusive Transition.

The President would be accompanied by the Governors of Adamawa, Kano, and Ondo States as well as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Environment. He is expected back in the Country on Thursday, December 14, 2017.

According to the statement, the participation of Nigeria’s delegation at the One Planet Summit will reinforce the country’s commitment to realising the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The summit is jointly organized by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim and Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres in partnership with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Others include: We Mean Business Coalition, Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the European Commission, C40 Cities Network, OECD and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
