Uneducated: How the Media turned Dino Melaye’s two sentences upside down

Senator representing Kogi West Constituency, Dino Melaye in a 16 seconds video on his Instagram page, had said “what is wrong with people? Someone will make money; you say you want to investigate the source of his wealth. When he was poor, did we investigate the source of his poverty, C’mon?”

This has however been misconstrued by some online media houses, who reported blaring headlines, some of which are ‘Don’t probe the rich alone investigate the poor also’, Why do you investigate rich people and leave the poor ones?’, and ‘Investigate the source of poverty not the source of people’s wealth’, among others.

Worthy of Note

1. The Senator did not even speak of poor people at all, he spoke of people who were poor and became rich.

2. Even when he made reference to when rich people were poor, he never said they should have been investigated, he said their poverty (not wealth) was not investigated.

3. Still when he says their poverty was not investigated, it didn’t mean it should have been, it meant just as you won’t hunt someone for not having, don’t hunt someone for having.

Sahara Reporters, on its part, went personal, as is now usual of the media house when Senator Saraki, Senator Dino Melaye and a few other enemies are involved.

The media house, in what many termed unprofessional, called the Senator’s short video “idiotic” and “moronic”.

Among those who misrepresented what the Senator said are Vanguard and DailyPost.
