Super Eagles to play five more friendly matches before Russia 2018

The President of the Nigeria Football Association, Amaju Pinnick, has said the Super Eagles of Nigeria will play five more friendly matches in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in Russia, if there are no hitches in plans.

“We are looking at a minimum of playing five top class friendlies before the World Cup proper”.

“We are looking at countries that are above us in the ranking and countries that are in the top 10 of world football ranking and countries that are in the World Cup as well”.

Pinnick stated that, some countries have been approached by the NFF and date is expected to be fixed for the matches.

Earlier, head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, called on the NFF to arrange friendly matches for the Super Eagles to help them sharpen and adequately prepare for the task ahead.

Rohr said he is keen to play some European countries, as encountering them isinevitable in the World Cup.

“We will be playing friendly games against some European countries because, as you know, each group at the World Cup will have two teams from Europe so it is good to have a feel of what we are likely going to be coming up against at the competition.

“We will see who we get when the World Cup draws are made on December 1 but no harm in planning ahead,” Rohr said.

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, has said that a friendly with England will be a welcome idea for the team after their test against Argentina.

So far, the Super Eagles of Nigeria has played only Argentina in an International friendly match as they prepare for Russia 2018.
