This new Book claims Patience Jonathan called AGF Adoke a “useless man”, but how much of a Book can be he said, she said?

Former first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, has been accused of calling former Attorney General of the Federation, Muhammad Bello Adoke a “useless man” for not helping disqualify President Muhammadu Buhari from the 2015 Presidential race.

According to the book titled ‘On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, opined that President Buhari be persecuted for certificate forgery and disqualified from contesting the 2015 Presidential elections.

It was made known that Bello Adoke argued against the move, saying there was no legal basis to prosecute Buhari, with the APC candidate going ahead to win the election.

“Two days after the election, Adoke had gone to see the President in respect of the appointment of a new chief judge for the FCT. While waiting in the outer room, the First Lady walked in. He rose to greet her, but she took one long look at him and hissed: ‘Useless man. You betrayed my husband, now that he has lost the election, you are happy. It was the same Attorney General that Bayo Ojo used to disqualify Atiku for Obasanjo (in 2007). It was the same office that (Mike) Aondoakaa used to make dead man (Umaru Musa Yar’Adua) to rule Nigeria. But when it comes to my husband, you will be shouting, constitution, constitution.’”

Owing to this, and apparently more issues, Adoke was largely blamed for the former President Jonathan’s loss at the polls.

“There were a number of other issues that led many in the president’s immediate political circle to conclude that Adoke was the reason that President Jonathan failed to act with the required toughness on some issues,” the book read.

Ink lies or errors, no difference

It is quite common to see publications emerging after certain incidents, all trying to tell a story that is unknown to a great lot.

However, sometimes these publications have been proven inaccurate in certain incidents that it tends to bring to light.

In Greg Mortenson’s book titled ‘Three Cups of Tea’, he tells a beautiful story of his humanitarian efforts to “fight terrorism and build nations, one school at a time.” But following Jon Krakauer’s claim of foul play and a subsequent lawsuit, it was revealed that Mortenson had given an inaccurate account of building schools as well as other events in the book.

Krakauer later wrote his own response in a  book titled, ‘Three Cups of Deceit’.

Similarly, in a book titled ‘It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey back to life by Lance Armstrong, a former Tour de France cyclist, he admitted contrary to what was written in the book, that he had actually cheated his way to seven Tour de France titles. Soon after, a class action complaint was filed by a public relations expert, Rob Stutzman and a cycling fan, against Armstrong, claiming his publishers violated the consumer protection laws on false advertising and fraud.

With politicians viewed as celebrities, a lot could go wrong if an incident is not accurately presented. The former Minister’s book is to be launched come November 30, expectantly more light would be thrown on the actual utterances of the former first lady.

With is disturbing to media watchers is how media houses in Nigeria often report such statement as fact instead of claims. The former First Lady antics, including the notorious reference to childbirth in certain areas of the country, do not help matters.
