The Mo Ibrahim Foundation on Sunday in Dakar, Senegal has placed Nigeria 35th out of 54 African countries in overall governance ranking.
Despite significant growth and improve in governance in the last five years, it scored Nigeria 48.1 per cent out of a possible 100.0 %, lower than the African average of 50.8 per cent and a West African regional average of 53.8 %.
Nigeria’s highest score in the category came in Participation and Human Rights with 52.5 % and had its lowest score in Sustainable Economic Opportunity, having 42.3 %.In the sub-category, Nigeria achieved its highest score in Rule of Law with 63.1 per cent and recording lowest in Accountability with 32.7 %.
The report added that, “Progress in accountability is held back by a large deterioration in corruption and bureaucracy.”
Nigeria also recorded an Overall Governance improvement over the last decade at an annual average trend of
+0.38, and an increase in the rate of improvement in the last five years with an annual average of +0.83
