Profiling Mugabe, the most “quoted” President in Africa

The Military has taken over Zimbabwe, but has however denied carrying out a coup as they only intend to purge the Government off criminals.

This is coming after Zimbabwean Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sacked by the President last week.

Major General Sibusiso Moyo in the early hours of Wednesday denied that the army was targeting the increasingly frail leader, stating that President Mugabe and his family were safe and sound and their security guaranteed.

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes… As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy”.

The man Robert Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924, four months after Southern Rhodesia became a British Crown colony.

Southern Rhodesia was ruled by predominantly white Legislative Assembly, life was not easy for the Shona people of Mugabe’s native as their freedom was curtailed by laws, their job opportunities were regulated by industry’s need for unskilled labour, and their education, in most cases, was limited to the grammar-school level.

In 1955, Mugabe moved to Northern Rhodesia, where he taught for four years at Chalimbana Training College while also working toward his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics through correspondence courses, with the University of London.

In 1963, he founded Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), a resistance movement against the British colonial rule. He was arrested and sent to Hwahwa Prison, for causing uprising.

He was however moved to Sikombela Detention Centre and later to Salisbury Prison. In 1964, while in prison, Mugabe relied on secret communications to launch guerrilla operations toward freeing Southern Rhodesia from the British rule. He spent 11 years in Prison.

In 1974, the then Prime Minister, Ian Smith, who claimed he would achieve true majority rule, but still declared his allegiance to the British Colonial Government, allowed Mugabe leave prison for a conference in Lusaka, Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia).

Mugabe escaped across the border to Southern Rhodesia, assembling a troop of Rhodesian guerrilla trainees along the way. By 1980, Southern Rhodesia was liberated from British rule and became the independent Republic of Zimbabwe.

In 1980, when the British rule ended, Mugabe became Prime Minister of the new Republic of Zimbabwe, after running against Nkomo of Zimbabwe Africans People Union (ZAPU).

Despite all odds, President Mugabe became the President in 1987. He is presently the World`s most educated President with seven degrees. He graduated from South Africa’s University of Fort Hare, where Nelson Mandela studied, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

He, however, did his other degrees by distance learning, two of them while he was in prison and others in Administration, Education, Science and Law. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe also has a very high literacy rate, one of Zimbabwe`s pride.

Fake quotes from Zimbabwean President

The love Africans have for Mugabe is best represented, strangely by, fake quotes which have been attributed to the President on so many occasions, hundreds of which are shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, amongst others. “Mugabe said it” came like “its the bitter truth” to many. Some of such FAKE quotes include:

My sister…why do you put such an expensive hairstyle on the same head that failed mathematics?

On Gay Marrige

“If President Barack Obama wants me to allow marriage for same-sex couples in my country (Zimbabwe), he must come here so that I marry him first.”

On Bus, Blair & Brown

Mr Bush, Mr. Blair and now Mr Brown’s sense of human rights precludes our people’s right to their God-given resources, which in their view must be controlled by their kith and kin. I am termed dictator because I have rejected this supremacist view and frustrated the neo-colonialists.

On Gay Marriage

If you take men and lock them in a house for five years and tell them to come up with two children and they fail to do that, then we will chop off their heads.

On Racism

South Africans will kick down a statue of a dead white man, but won’t even attempt to slap a live one. Yet they can stone to death a black man simply because he’s a foreigner

On Relationships

Don’t fight even over girlfriends. The country is full of beautiful women. If you can’t get one, come to Mugabe for assistance.

The way Africa is corrupt .You need connections to get into a relationship. She will ask you….’ Who gave you my number?

On Racism

The only White man you can trust is a dead white man.

On Homosexuality

Even Satan wasn’t gay; he chose to approach unclad Eve instead of unclad Adam

On African Women

It is hard to bewitch African girls these days. Each time you take a piece from her hair to the witch doctor, either a Brazilian innocent woman gets mad or a factory in China catches fire

Authentic Quotes

There are however genuine and authentic quotes from the Zimbabwean President. Some of these include:

African Unity

“Africa must revert to what it was before the imperialists divided it. These are artificial divisions which we, in our pan-African concept will seek to remove”

On Race

What we hate is not the colour of their skins, but the evil that emanates from them.

On what he stands for

I am still the Hitler of the time. This Hitler has only one objective, justice for his own people, sovereignty for his people, recognition of the independence of his people, and their right to their resources. If that is Hitler, then let me be a Hitler tenfold. Ten times, that is what we stand for.

On CommonWealth

If the choice was made for us, one for us to lose our sovereignty and become a member of the Commonwealth or to remain with our sovereignty and lose membership of the Commonwealth, then I would say, let the Commonwealth go. What is it to us? Our people are overjoyed, the land is ours. We are now the rulers and owners of Zimbabwe.

On Roots

The white man is not indigenous to Africa. Africa is for Africans. Zimbabwe is for Zimbabweans.

Robert Mugabe has been labelled the oldest serving Head of State in Africa and in the World. The longest serving Head of State in England is Queen Elizabeth who was born in 1926 and assumed office in 1952. She is 91 years old and the Queen of England and about 15 Countries. The Queen has sent 65 years in office, Mugabe has spent 37.

President of Tunisia, Beji Caid Essebsi is also 91 years old and has ruled the country since 2014. Cuban President, Raul Castro is 86 years old and has ruled since 2008.
