Italy’s Andrea Pirlo “hangs boot”

Former Italy’s Midfielder, Andrea Pirlo, has announced his retirement from football after playing his last game for New York City FC.

Pirlo, 38, has made 116 appearances for Italy including the Germany 2006 World Cup trophy against France.

He began his career at Brescia before playing for other major clubs mostly in the Italian Serie A. He played foAC Milan), and Juventus.

In a statement, Pirlo expressed gratitude to “every team that I had the honour to play for” and “every team-mate that I have been pleased to play alongside.

 “Not only has my adventure in New York come to an end but my journey as a football player as well,” he said.

New York City manager and former France International, Patrick Vieira said Pirlo “changed football forever”.

Former club side Juventus also described him as a “true genius”.

In his 22 years football career, the Italian won two Serie A titles, two Champions League trophies and a Club World Cup from 2003 to 2011.

He also aided Juventus to a four consecutive Scudettos titles between 2012 and 2015.

On his move to New York in 2015, he alongside former Chelsea and England midfielder, Frank Lampard and Spanish striker, David Villa helped Patrick Vieira reach the MLS playoffs in the past two seasons, despite not adding any other silver ware to his name.

 
“Everyone at New York City FC would like to congratulate Andrea on an incredible career and to thank him for his excellent contribution to NYCFC over the past two and a half years.” the club said.

While speaking on his retirement, Coach Vieira said: “He’s one of the best holding midfielders ever – he changed the position of the number six.

“Before, the role was just tackling and winning the ball, but now you have to be a play-maker, you have to be as good as your number 10 with the ball.

“He had a fantastic career, not just on the field but off it because he’s a true gentleman. He’s a really good guy.”

Former clubs have also paid tribute and showered the Maestro with praises wishing him well as he moves on.
