Temper flares: Evra sent off for kicking fan in the head

Marseille player, Patrice Evra, was sent off after kicking a fan in the head during warm up to the team’s Europa match at Vitoria Guimaraes.

The former United player was named as a substitute for the match but was dismissed following the incident.

It was reported that the Marseille supporters had been jeering at Evra for up to half an hour while the players were warming up for their game and Evra had gone to talk to them before the matter escalated.

Evra has won the Premier League on five occasions as well as the Champions League while in Manchester United. He joined Marseilles from Juventus in the January transfer windows and has since played just two games this season.

“Pat has experience and he must not react, it’s obvious. You can’t respond to insults, as bad as they are and as incredible as they might be. He must learn to keep his cool,” said Marseille coach Rudi Garcia.

In 2008, Evra was in similar situation.

He was handed a four-match ban and fined £15,000 after he clashed with Chelsea grounds man Sam Bethell as the Red Devils warmed down after a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

He was found guilty of pushing Bethell with his chest and then striking him on the side of the head.

There was also his infamous clash with former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in December 2011.

Evra accused Suarez of racially abusing him, with the Uruguayan banned eight games and hit with a £40,000 fine from the Football Association.

The pair then clashed again at Old Trafford three months later, when Evra said the striker refused a handshake.

On January 25, 1995, Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona caused controversy around the world in an away match at Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman was sent-off by the referee for a kick on opposition defender Richard Shaw.

As he walked towards the tunnel along the touchline, Cantona launched a kung-fu kick towards Crystal Palace supporter, Matthew Simmons after he had ran down 11 flights of stairs to confront and direct abuse at the Red Devils forward.

Cantona followed the kick with a series of punches and was hit with a nine month ban from all football competitions and also with a criminal charge of assault.

He was eventually sentenced to 120 hours of community service.

Manchester United then hit him with a £20,000 fine while the Football Association and FIFA gave him an eight-month suspension from football and fined him a further £10,000.

Meanwhile, UEFA is expected to investigate the incident involving Evra.

Marseille has not made any comment on the incident and has also ignored the clash on the official Twitter handle.

They next play Caen in the Ligue 1 on Sunday.
