Ahead of Governor Obaseki’s one year in office: A review of achievements

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, would be marking his one year in office this November. In the last one year, he has been receiving accolades from indigenes and residents as well as major political and religious stakeholders for his serious developmental strides and for extent to which he has fulfilled his campaign promises.

The Governor who promised to build on the foundation of his successor and continue to design an Edo State where investors would gladly invest, has carried out a good number of innovative infrastructural plans which can be seen in the way the city now looks in terms of aesthetics. The areas around New Benin Market and Oba Market which used to be overcrowded as a result of traders displaying their wares on the road and walkways endangering their lives and the lives of pedestrians are now free and this has facilitated the easy flow of traffic.

In June, the youths of Okpuje community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, under the aegis of Okpuje Patriots and Okpuje Progressive Union, [OPU], home and abroad, expressed their delight and gratitude to the Governor for fulfilling his campaign promises to the community with the construction of Okpuje Road.

According to the youths, “He has matched words with action, as evidenced in our hitherto bad road, which was a nightmare, a hindrance to free movement and a terrible obstacle to easy evacuation of the farm produce by our people,”

The Muslim community in the State also attest to the Governor’s warm-heartedness towards every single individual or group in the state irrespective of creed. In an exclusive interview with ETN24, Ustadh Ibrahim Oyarekhua, Chairman of the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, narrated how the Governor came to the rescue of Muslim faithfuls who were stranded at the Hajj Board when their flight was postponed.

In the interview, Ustadh Ibrahim said that the Governor, who paid the camp a visit, was informed of the situation and the Governor generously asked that no one returns home due to the logistics and extra expenses. He said the Governor took up the bill for feeding the then intending pilgrims for the next few days before departure.

In the area of traffic control, the Governor has also been active as he has spearheaded the reforming of the Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency which was launched to check the excesses of traffic offenders and control flow of traffic within the State. The Agency has been provided with the most recent tools and technology needed for the execution of their responsibility.

Also worthy of note is the State Governor’s directive trade and transport unions to desist from double taxation which was encumbering businesses and causing unnecessary hike in the prices of goods and services. This development brought a smile to the face of the people of Edo State, because it had its effect on everyone.

The current administration has been focused on building an Edo State that would attract foreign investors and investments and this can be seen in the revamping of the State both aesthetically and structurally. As the administration advances to the next year, many look forward to much more rehabilitation of the State in the remaining areas.

The Governor commended his Deputy, Philip Shuaibu and the Secretary to the State Government [SSG], Barr. Osarodion Oge, for their unrelenting efforts in ensuring that his government runs well. Addressing the people of Ikpoba Okha Local Government, where the SSG hails from, the Governor appraised the combined efforts of his Deputy and the SSG.

The Governor also announced that as part of his one year anniversary celebration, he would be laying the foundation for an Industrial Park in Ologbo community.

“During the one year anniversary of this administration, we will lay the foundation of an Industrial park at Ologbo. We will create job for our youths through this means to fulfil our electioneering promises of job creation for the people of the state”

The current administration has been focused on building an Edo State that would attract foreign investors and investments and this can be seen in the revamping of the State both aesthetically and structurally. As the administration advances to the next year, we look forward to much more rehabilitation of the State in the remaining areas.
