Why Charly Boy, Group wants ex-SGF, others tried for corruption

A coalition of civil society groups led by maverick artist, Charly Boy, has demanded the prosecution of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and other senior officials who were investigated for corruption.

The coalition included ‘#OurMumuDonDo Movement’ led by Charly Boy, ‘Concerned Nigerians’ headed by Deji Adeyanju, ‘Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy’ convened by Ariyo Atoye, ‘Campaign for Democracy’ chaired by Baku Usman and ‘MAD Connect’ led by Moses Paul.

The group, at a sit-out at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja, expressed distaste for President Buhari’s perceived silence and inaction concerning the top officials indicted for corruption by the investigative agencies.

Mr Deji Adeyanju told newsmen that they wanted the President to be aware of his perceived partiality which may not be intended and to re-evaluate the pertinent questions about the seriousness of his anti-graft war. He also queried the alleged failure of the Federal government in prosecuting the suspended Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mr Ayo Oke, over the $43m found in Osborne Apartments in Lagos State.

He also said that when a government orders a raid on the homes of judges suspected to be tainted with corruption and alleged corrupt members of the opposition, but does not pay attention to similar cases by a different set of persons, then that government may be sending a message of partiality even though it may not mean to.

The group stated that for the sake of avoiding misconception within the people and suspicion of the process of rule of law, the prosecution of the indicted office holders should be carried out.

Charly Boy advised that the President continue in general fairness in the execution of justice as he fights against corruption.
