“Anyone who delays visa for our Nationals, we would also do the same as a Country because we have pride as a Nation” – Abdulrahman Dambazau

Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd.), has said the Federal Government will deal with any Country the way they deal with Nigeria on visa issuance, saying Nigeria need to take a stand.

“Anybody who delays visa for our Nationals, we would also do the same as a Country because we have pride as a Nation”.

He stated that it is embarrassing to apply for visa and get unnecessary delay from issuance Countries.

“They should not think that we need them more than they need us”.

Dambazau, made this statement in a meeting with the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mohammed Babandede, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja, on Monday.

Mr Babandede agreed with the Minister of Interior, stating that Nigeria is committed to issuing passports and visas on time to people around the world.

“What we are saying is that we as a Country, we would also like to retaliate”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that the Nation faced a consular services challenge, adding that there was need to enhance ease of doing business in the Country.

There are Countries like Benin Republic, Chad, Cote d’ Iviore amongst others who offer free visa services to Nigerian passport holders.

Countries like Burundi, Comoros, and Cape Verde among others offer visa on arrival to Nigerians as well.

The reasons for delay in the issuance of visa varies; it ranges from not filling the applications properly, not producing enough documentation, the need for further investigation amongst others.

Statistics shows that Nigerians living abroad are estimated to be about 5 million to 15 million people.

Over 300,000 Nigerians, travel out of the Country each year, for reasons ranging from tourism, healthcare and vacation among others. Nigeria is home to about 1.5 to 1.7 million foreigners.
