Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has charged the Palace Chiefs and Enigie in the Kingdom to rise to the occasion, through whatever means, and tackle the menace of crime threatening the lives of citizens of Edo State.
“As leaders, the Chiefs and Enigie must evolve an enduring solution to this mindless situation”.
His Royal Majesty criticised the rising spate of crime in Edo State, condemning the recent cases of kidnapping, killings and armed robbery.
Oba Ewuare II, who was represented by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, in a meeting which was held on Tuesday, expressed displeasure over the development saying it was uncalled for.
He noted that there have been growing tensions over increasing criminal activities in different parts of the State, urging the Chiefs and Enigie to take action.
Also, in a statement signed by the Secretary, Benin Traditional Council, Mr Frank Irabor, and the Iyase, the council frowned at the use of Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre for trading.
The Council said the development was contrary to the request, made by the State Government to the Oba of Benin, that commercial vehicles should be allowed to use the Centre pending the construction of a permanent park.
“The Benin Traditional Council observed with dismay the act of vandalism on the buildings, which showed signs of being inconsiderate by the traders and bus drivers despite the magnanimity of the Palace towards them”.
“Henceforth buses would only be allowed to operate at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre between 6am and 8pm daily only”.
