Extraordinary Messi drags Argentina to World Cup, calls for unity among players

Argentina narrowly secured a spot at the Russia 2018 World Cup following an extraordinary performance from magnificent Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi shouldered the responsibility of a Nation after Argentina went down courtesy a 38 seconds goal from Renato Ibarra due to poor defending from Argentina.

Jorge Sampaoli’s men who had failed to score in previous games had to draw inspiration from a one-two combination from Lionel Messi and Di Maria as Messi put the Argentines back in the game in the 12th minute of play.

The mystical Messi added a second in the 20th minute as Argentina led into half time. He completed his hat trick in the 62nd minute as he drove in a superb shot above the goalkeeper.

Argentina, which has not scored an open goal since November 2016 after a penalty against Chile, needed a tough comeback as Messi collaborated with Di Maria to level up and eventually extended the lead.

The South American nation has won the tournaments twice since 1970. A win was needed in order to advance to the finals of the 2018 World cup in Russia.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has called for unity among players and fans, telling them “it is important we all unite” after a scary qualification for Russia 2018.

“Today was an important day for all of us. Luckily we reacted quickly to Ecuador goal. We fought and suffered. We could not miss going to the World cup,” he said.

Recall that Lionel Messi opted to retire from international football following a defeat to Chile during the COPA America final in June last year.

However, Lionel Messi, who was begged out of retirement by practically the whole of Argentina, has insisted that he is committed to the progress of the national team with hopes of leading them to triumph after losing to Germany in the final match during the last Edition.

“Every time I am selected, I try to give my best, both for myself and the group,” Leo concluded.

In a related comment, Javier Mascherano has said that Argentina must learn from mistakes made.

“Together we can pull forward. Argentina has to change, not only us but also the next generation. We must analyse what has happened so far and try to improve.”

Argentina is set to join Brazil, Uruguay and Columbia.
