NYSC revives farming for Corpers

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, has noted that the scheme is set to revive the dying farm settlements in Bauchi, Kebbi, Oyo and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

Speaking yesterday at the 2017 NYSC Annual Management Conference in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the DG noted that the integrated Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Centre in Gombe and Ekiti States is near completion to give graduates the freedom to be self-reliant as they complete their service year.

He also said the event is a means for critical evaluation of policies and operations that will add value to the NYSC scheme.

“The choice of this year’s theme, ‘Enhancing the Operations of the NYSC Through Strategic Planning’ is informed by our determination to set the agenda for deliberations to consolidate on the successes of the previous year.

“We have continued to build on the successes of the previous administrations; our modest achievements include promotion of industrial harmony and staff motivation through robust welfare packages and training.

“Others are the resuscitation of the once moribund NYSC farm settlements in Bauchi, Kebbi, Oyo and FCT, near completion of the integrated Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Centres in Gombe and Ekiti states, respectively, and the ongoing construction of the one for South-South at Ezi, Delta State.”

Brig- Gen Kazuare had said in June, that corps member would be deployed to farms in line with the agricultural development programme of the NYSC.

“It should interest you to know that the NYSC will soon begin its agricultural development scheme where corp members will be posted to farms for their primary assignments.”

He also urged the corps members not to seek white-collar jobs that are not in existence but should rather focus and develop their entrepreneurship potentials.

“The NYSC has provided all the tools and support you need to develop your capacity to the fullest, it now depends on you, there is no short cut to success but by hard work.

“Of all the programmes outlined for you during the orientation, there is none more important that you must fully participate in than the SAED programme.

“I want you to create your own jobs by being creative and innovative, you must strive to be labour employers rather than labour seekers.

“Please don’t look for white-collar jobs, your skills and potentials can serve you better in the way of realising your dreams,” he said.
