Nigerian Statistician Association (NSA) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to conduct Population census

In the just concluded International Statistical Conference, organised by Nigerian Statistician Association (NSA), with the theme “Positioning National Statistical Systems for Data Revolution and Inclusive Development”, which had over 350 participants and over 100 paper presentations, President Muhammadu Buhari was urged to conduct population census at regular intervals.

In a statement signed by its NSA President, Sidney Onyeagbu and National Secretary Dr Olatunji Arowolo, it was observed that there were no measures put in place to check population growth

“State Governments who are yet to enact their statistics laws are enjoined as a matter of urgency to do so, and all States are enjoined to implement the statistical master plan to the letter”

They recommended that government at all level work towards the establishment of a successful e-government and re-introduce statistics as a core subject in the secondary school curriculum.

“Government at all levels should make adequate provisions for the funding of statistics and consequently make use of the results of such exercises in the design and implementation of programmes for the citizenry”

They appealed to the President to sign the Chartered Institute Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) bill into law, as it has been passed by the National Assembly for over two years.
