You are safe here – Adamawa Governor assures Igbos, amidst tensions in the South East

The Governor of Adamawa State, Muhammad Bindow Jibrilla, has assured the Igbos living in the State that they are safe.

He made the announcement amidst tension and crisis going on in the South-Eastern region between the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and security forces.

Governor Jibrilla, who received the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, on a courtesy visit to his office, said

“We will like to assure Igbo residents in the state of their safety, despite the growing tension in parts of the South-East States.’’

The Attorney General was in Adamawa State for the Attorney-General and State Commissioners’ of Justice summit holding in Yola, the State capital.

The Chief Justice of the Federation also called on States in Nigeria to join hands with the Federal Government in uprooting Hate Speech in Nigeria.

In June, the Governor also assured the Igbo Community that they can go about their business as there is no cause to panic.

Although, the State has been under several attacks from Boko Haram insurgents of which the latest was in Mandarari local government where 20 people were killed and several others injured. There has however not been any attack targeted at the Igbos in the State.

Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader, had earlier announced that the Igbos should leave the North after an anti-Igbo song was allegedly said to have been released by some Northerners.

Kanu said

“I am aware of an anti-Igbo song circulating now in the North. My reaction has been to warn our people in the North that the pogrom being hatched by our enemies will come. There is an impending doom for our people living in the North.

“So, the best they can do is to leave the North and come home so that we can have our Biafra and build an economy capable of assimilating and absorbing all their potential and creative abilities.”

The song was released when the Coalition of Northern Youth gave Quit Notice to the Igbos to leave the North before October 1.

The notice has however been revoked after a meeting with the Governor of Borno State and a meeting with the Igbo leaders who reside in the North.

There have been serious agitations for secession by IPOB in the South-East. The group established a Secret Service which its leader claims is meant to protect the people.
