An earthquake of magnitude 8.1 has hit the Southern coast of Mexico killing at least 90 people and triggering small tsunami waves. The tremors about 1000km from the epicentre was reported to have been felt by over 50 million people.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said the quake was the strongest in the country in a century. Schools have been told to close, as President Enrique Pena Nieto orders immediate assessment of the damage nationwide.
The last earthquake was in September 19, 1985 with a magnitude of 8.1, killing over 10,000 people. It is the worse earthquake to hit Mexico in 100 years.
