FIFA fires Ghanaian referee, orders replay of South Africa, Senegal match

World football governing body, FIFA, has ordered a replay of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier match between South Africa and Senegal.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) had upheld the lifetime ban placed on Ghanaian referee Joseph Odartei Lamptey following a complaint lodged over the overall performance of the referee which saw the 2-1 victory over Senegal wiped off.

The Ghanaian referee had incorrectly awarded a penalty against Senegal. The ball had hit the Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly on the leg but he pointed to the spot.

This means South Africa remain bottom of group D with only a single point.

In the meantime, South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has denied all wrongdoings and has subsequently vowed to study FIFA’s report before deciding on whether to take an appeal or not.
