Aregbesola is the major problem of LAUTECH – NANS President

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state has been accused of being the major reason LAUTECH students are always at home due to persistent strike actions. In an interview with ETN24, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Haruna Kadiri, stated that NANS has never been quiet on the plight of students in LAUTECH but has been frustrated by the fact that there is a sharing arrangement between the Government of Oyo and Osun State to run the school.

Comrade Haruna explained that while the Oyo State government has tried, Governor Aregbesola of Osun state has been frustrating efforts made to resolve the issues.

“the major problem of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is Aregbesola, the government of Oyo have tried in their bid to make sure that they comply…whenever we engage Aregbesola you see him running. Whenever Aregbesola is not around, the Oyo state Governor will put him on call and put it on speaker. You will be shocked to hear what is coming out of Aregbesola’s mouth”.

“Aregbesola was faced with backlogs of unpaid salaries as one would be forced to ask, when APC government came on board, they gave bailout about twice, Paris refund has come up, I think about three tranches is out what have all these monies been used for?”

Comrade Haruna expressed hope that the issues would be resolved soon. He called on the Federal Government to make LAUTECH a Federal Institution saying:

“Federal government should absolve LAUTECH and upgrade it to a Federal Institution because if it is left in the hands of these two governments, we will always have issues”

Meanwhile, it is on record that the Governor of Osun State, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, hosted some Medical students who returned from Ukraine, after the completion of their studies, solely sponsored by the Osun State government.

The Governor was also reported to have said the two states were financially incapacitated adding that

“If UNIOSUN with fewer numbers of students than LAUTECH could run successfully within its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), I see no reason why LAUTECH with more students’ population cannot run itself”.

However, the Governor of Oyo State was at the receiving end of criticism based on how he treated students who led a peaceful protest to government house: watch the video below,

LAUTECH Chapter of ASUU also joined in the ongoing nationwide strike declared about three weeks ago by the national body of the union, thereby prolonging the crisis of the University.

However, there is hope as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, during a press conference announced that the University will re-open in some days’ time adding that the university was close to getting solutions to its problems. LAUTECH’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adeniyi Gbadegesin and other principal officers of the university as well as members of the Governing Council including Prof. Lai Olurode, were also present at the press conference.
