Declare a state of emergency in the Health Sector – NMA, Edo State Chairman

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Edo State Chapter has raised alarm over the poor state of health facilities in Edo State.

The State Chairman of NMA, Dr Emmanuel Osaigbovo, stated that the health sector needed urgent attention in order to stop unnecessary deaths in the State hospital.

He complained that the doctors use candles in hospital wards rather than electricity and urged the State government to declare a State of Emergency in the health sector.

“In some of these obsolete facilities, doctors in their usual zeal to work resort to the use of candles and personal rechargeable lanterns when the authorities fail to provide basic electricity”

The NMA Chairman also complained of the dilapidated structure at the Central Hospital and its lack of maintenance, noting that it posed a risk to the sick and the Doctors as well.

“Today, there is hardly any functional ward that is befitting for the people to recover from their infirmities. The wards are dilapidated and ironically pose a major health risk to those who are being cared for and those who render services therein. We seriously hope that there is no collapse of one of those buildings on people who have come to the hospital to get better or on those who have come there to make people feel better”

He pointed out that the Theatres and laboratories lack basic equipment and regretted that patients had to seek help in otherTtheatres and most times fall into the hands of quacks.

“The theatres and laboratories are at best skeletal in the services they render due to lack of basic equipment and consumables. Patients have to seek help in peripheral facilities and most times fall into the hands of quacks”

The Central hospital has a new 200 bed wing as well as a new Accident and Emergency Unit all built while Governor Oshiomole was in office. Despite commissioning it is yet to be functional. The hospital’s website is strangely filled with pictures of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
