Parents of 10 year old alleged victim of Owerri Market demolition seeks justice

Mr. and Mrs. Ibeanusi, the parents of Somtochukwu, the 10 year old boy allegedly killed in the crisis that accompanied the demolition of the Ekeukwu Market in Owerri Imo State, are calling for justice over the killing of their son. This is even as the Governor of the State, Rochas Okorocha, says Somtochukwu’s death has no link with Ekeukwu market relocation.

The parents lamented that the victim was their only son and their only source of hope and asked the Imo State Government to bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.

Controversies followed the demolition of the Ekeukwu Owerri Market on Douglas Road. The State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), through its Publicity Secretary, Ray Emeanya , directed party faithfuls to mourn the Victim by attending a special church service in his honour. Emeanya, who at weekend paid a visit to the decease’s family also directed members of PDP to observe the mourning period by wearing black bands.

Meanwhile, in spite of the order to quit the market, many traders carried on with their normal sales in the market while others plied their trade at the Relief Market, off Egbu Road,Owerri.

Governor Rochas Okorocha, insisted that the death of the Somtochukwu during the demolition exercise of the Ekeukwu Owere had nothing to do with the incidence.

A signed Statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, maintained that he needed to be convinced after 72 hours that the boy was killed around the market’s vicinity. Consequently, the Imo state Police Command has given assurance that it has started the investigation of the alleged killing of Somtochukwu during the demolition exercise last weekend. The Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said this in a statement yesterday, while also warning against derogatory speeches.

“The Police Command has begun full scale investigation into the alleged death of one Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, reported to the Police on August 27,2017. Investigators have interviewed the parents and will stop at nothing in ensuring that the circumstances and ramifications of the matter are unraveled” The statement read.

Meanwhile, in continuing the demolition exercise, bulldozers where rolled into the Ama Hausa Market by the Imo State government.

Chairman of Zinix Group, Leo stan Ekeh, has called on the Imo State people to allow peace to reign in the aftermath of the crisis and reported loss of lives, which followed the demolition of the Market. Ekeh, an Indigene of Owerri, announced a donation of N50million to be given to the victims of the annihilated market, and those whose members of their family lives where lost on last Saturday’s demolition exercise.
