Attack on Police men near a Church sparks fear

In less than a week after unknown gunmen attacked a church in Ozubulu village in Anambara state, another attack on Police men sparked fears as it was carried out near a church in the same State.

Gunmen were reported to have attacked a patrol team near a church killing a policeman and a motorcycle rider.

An eye witness account told newsmen that the gunmen had briefly stopped at the Assemblies of God Church, but on seeing the men on patrol, open fire on them.

“When the fire became too hot, the policemen abandoned their vehicle and ran for safety”

The gunmen were said to have moved towards the abandoned vehicle and took the rifle belonging to the policeman they killed.

He further said he saw two of the gunmen but cannot identify how many they are in the number.

Another eyewitness account said

“Gunmen on Okada (motorcycle) shot a policeman and took his rifle. They also shot dead an Okada man while escaping, and the passenger he was carrying was injured. The policeman was the one armed among his colleagues; they were providing security while church service was going on at Assemblies of God Church, Oguta road Onitsha.

Reacting to the event, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar confirmed the incident to the journalists while saying the attack was against his men and not the church.

“My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”, he said.

He also confirmed that the criminals took away the gun of the killed policeman.
